日本の現代アーティスト／カスタムビルダー。1998年にハーレーダビッドソン専門のカスタムショップ「BAD LAND」を設立。世界的カスタムビルダーとして独自の造形美を追求してきた経験を礎に、2023年よりアートブランド「UNDULATION」を始動。金属を主原料とする特殊塗料、多層塗膜の積層と削り出しによる独自技法を用い、金属加工の知識や技術を用いて心象風景をアートへと表現した「唯一無二」の世界観は国内外で高い評価を受けている。これまでに代官山蔦屋書店、阪急メンズ東京、バーニーズ ニューヨーク横浜店などで作品を発表。2024年にはフィリップス香港オークションにて作品が高額落札され、人生の転機に選ばれるアートとして、既に国内外から高い評価を得ている。作家名の「華(はな)」は、今は亡き愛猫の名に由来し、最後までまっすぐに力強く生き抜いたその存在への敬意が込められている。現在は6匹の猫と暮らしながら制作を続けている。
UNDULATION
UNDULATIONは、クワイ華による現代アートブランドです。温度や湿度が一定の条件下でしか扱うことのできないナノサイズの極小粒子からできた銀の塗料。その特殊塗料をメインに様々な色の塗料を幾層も重ね、削りや研磨を繰り返しながら、一点一点制作されています。作品は、光の角度や時間帯によって表情を変え、平面でありながら立体的な奥行きと存在感を生み出します。制作には、長年500台以上のハーレーダビッドソンのカスタム製作によって培われた工業塗装技術や金属加工技術が応用されています。通常は機械によって均一に仕上げられる工業的な工程を、UNDULATIONではあえて作家自らの手で行うことで、8年ものの時間をかけて確立した工業的精度と手仕事ならではの揺らぎの両方を一つの作品の中に共存させています。そのわずかな揺らぎや痕跡には、人の手でしか生み出せない温度感や感覚が宿り、作品に独自の質感と表情を与えています。印象的な線や渦巻きのモチーフは、狛犬や龍から着想を得たものです。守護やエネルギーの流れを象徴しながら、力強さと静けさを表現しています。高度な技術を要する金属系特殊塗料、多層塗膜の積層と削り出し、そして人の手による繊細な仕上げ。その融合によって生まれる表情は二つとして同じものがなく、工業技術とアート、工業的精度と手仕事の揺らぎを併せ持つ、UNDULATIONならではの唯一無二の世界観を生み出しています。

Japanese contemporary artist and custom builder. In 1998, he founded BAD LAND, a custom motorcycle workshop specializing in Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Drawing on decades of experience pursuing a distinctive aesthetic as a world-renowned custom builder, he launched the contemporary art brand UNDULATION in 2023. Using a unique technique that combines specialized metallic paints, multilayered surfaces, carving, and polishing, Kuwai transforms inner landscapes and emotions into art through his extensive knowledge of metalworking and industrial finishing. The resulting works create a truly one-of-a-kind visual language that has earned recognition both in Japan and internationally. His works have been exhibited at venues including Daikanyama Tsutaya Books, Hankyu Men’s Tokyo, and Barneys New York Yokohama. In 2024, one of his works achieved a notable sale at an auction held by Phillips in Hong Kong, further establishing UNDULATION as an art collection chosen to mark significant moments and turning points in life. The artist’s given name, “Hana,” was inspired by his beloved late cat. It reflects his admiration for the strength and sincerity with which she lived her life until the very end. Today, he continues to create while sharing his life with six cats.
UNDULATION
UNDULATION is a contemporary art brand created by Kuwai Hana.
At the core of each work is a unique silver-based paint composed of nanoscale particles, a material that can only be handled under carefully controlled temperature and humidity conditions. Using this highly specialized paint as the primary medium, multiple layers of various colors are applied, then repeatedly carved, sanded, and polished by hand to create each piece individually.
The works transform according to the angle of light and the time of day, revealing changing expressions and creating a remarkable sense of depth and presence despite being two-dimensional surfaces.
The production process draws upon industrial painting and metalworking techniques cultivated through the customization of more than 500 Harley-Davidson motorcycles over many years. Processes that are normally completed with machine-made precision are intentionally executed by the artist’s own hands. Through eight years of experimentation and refinement, UNDULATION has established a unique approach that allows industrial precision and the subtle irregularities of handcraftsmanship to coexist within a single work.
These delicate traces and variations, achievable only through human touch, imbue each piece with warmth, texture, and individuality. The distinctive lines and swirling motifs are inspired by guardian lion-dogs (Komainu) and dragons, symbolizing protection and the flow of energy while expressing both strength and tranquility.
The fusion of highly specialized metallic coatings, multilayered surfaces carved and revealed through sanding, and meticulous hand-finishing creates expressions that can never be replicated. Each work is entirely unique, embodying a world where industrial technology and art, precision and human sensitivity, exist in harmony. This singular balance defines the unmistakable and one-of-a-kind universe of UNDULATION.
