黒く艶めく表面に、墨を含ませた筆が走るように刻まれた線。ところどころに施された削りの表情は、水墨画に描かれる梅の枝を思わせます。表面のすべてを覆うのではなく、深い黒の余白を残すことで、削られた部分とのコントラストが際立つ。10本の時計を収めるケースでありながら、そこには一枚の絵画を眺めるような余韻があります。
特殊塗料を幾重にも重ね、乾燥、削り、磨きを繰り返すことで生まれるUNDULATION独自の外装。削る場所、残す場所、その深さや線の流れによって、表面には二つとない景色が現れます。濃く、淡く、時にかすれるように残る削り跡は、均一なパターンではなく、手の動きそのものを感じさせるもの。光が差し込むたび、黒の艶と削りによる質感が交わり、ひとつの表情がゆっくりと変化していきます。
その佇まいは、近くで見るほど繊細で、少し離れるほど一枚の作品として印象的になる。削られていない黒の面もまた、このケースを構成する重要な要素です。描かれたものだけではなく、あえて残された余白まで含めてひとつの景色をつくる。その考え方に、日本の美意識を感じさせます。
内装には、ハンドメイドデザイナー・葛野慎吾が仕立てるクロコダイルを採用。独特のグレインと立体的な質感が、外装の繊細な表情に異なる奥行きを添えています。ケースを開けば、外装の黒と削りの痕跡、そしてクロコダイルの豊かな表情がひとつにつながり、10本のタイムピースを収めるための空間そのものが完成します。

Across the lustrous black surface, lines sweep like the movement of a brush laden with ink. The scraped marks, appearing here and there across the exterior, evoke the branches of a plum tree in an ink wash painting. Rather than covering the entire surface, areas of deep black are deliberately left untouched, allowing the contrast between the polished black and the exposed layers to come into focus. Designed to house ten timepieces, the case carries the quiet presence of a painting, inviting the eye to linger.
The exterior is created through UNDULATION’s distinctive process of layering specialized paint, repeatedly drying, scraping, and polishing the surface. Where the paint is scraped, where it is left untouched, the depth of each mark, and the direction of each line all contribute to a landscape that can never be replicated. Some traces appear dense and defined, others lighter and almost fleeting, preserving the movement of the hand rather than forming a uniform pattern. As light moves across the surface, the lustre of the black meets the texture of the scraped layers, allowing the expression to shift gradually.
The piece reveals a delicate character when viewed up close, yet takes on the presence of a singular artwork from a distance. Even the untouched areas of black become an essential part of the composition. It is not only what has been revealed, but also what has deliberately been left as negative space, that completes the image. In this balance between mark and restraint lies a distinctly Japanese sensibility.
The interior is crafted by handmade designer Shingo Kuzuno using carefully selected crocodile leather. Its distinctive grain and sculptural texture introduce another layer of depth, complementing the nuanced character of the exterior. When opened, the lustrous black, the traces of scraping, and the rich expression of the crocodile leather come together to create a considered setting for ten timepieces.
Not everything needs to be filled. There is beauty in the space that remains. The contrast between the lines revealed through scraping and the lustrous black left untouched gives the case a character that grows richer with time. More than a place to house ten watches, it brings the sensation of placing a landscape within a space, embodying a distinctive expression of UNDULATION.
